Hello and welcome to the Builders Collective of Australia.

The Builders Collective of Australia is a not for profit organisation formed in 2000 to combat Last Resort Home Owners Warranty.

After so many years, of so many Australian home owners, builders, trades and suppliers being blatantly rorted by this government scheme (excluding the Queensland and Tasmania State Governments) you have to ask why does Last Resort Home Owners Warranty continue?

With all the media articles of people suffering and all the government inquiries - simply tell us why we need it if there is no consumer or industry benefit?

You have to ask who benefits and where do the hundreds of millions of dollars in fees go?

Is there any clearer example of how poorly this scheme works then to look at the Beechwood Homes fiasco versus what would have happened had the builder collapsed under a Queensland type Home Owners Warranty program. The more people understand the issue the more they are incensed. Catherine Cusack, NSW Opposition Minister for Fair Trading has just launched a dedicated website here on the issue.

It is time to hold whoever makes decisions (to act or not act) on this issue to social account

In the next week we will begin publishing an updated list of every politician, relevant public servant and industry association president and their stated position on the issue - "Are you for the immediate dumping of Last Resort Home Owners Warranty?"

Committee's recommendations don't go nearly far enough,

The Last Resort Home Builders Warranty Insurance Senate Inquiry report fails to recommend the far-reaching makeover of a system that is expensive, mandatory and close to useless.The irritating thing about the name change recommended in the report,is that this will do nothing to change the fact that the insurance benefits very few people who've jumped an enormous number of hoops to access it. The rest of us are left fending for ourselves (and still donating to insurance companies).

I have just read the article in The Age, Saturday 2/8/08, and want to share a few brief notes with you. We built a house in Victoria in 2001, at the end of what started easily but finsished poorly, we moved in - 6 weeks late. We noted a number of faults and had a hard time getting the local builder to fix them, but eventually we achieved this. This left one major flaw, the atrocious installation of 80m2 of timber strip flooring, which was meant to be a highlight. The builder didnt want to touch it, so we had to call upon VERO, who were the insurers. VERO proved to be very obstinate, and sought to defeclt our claim at every step. After four years of battling with them, and becoming somewhat of an expert of timber flooring and dealing with the lack of service from VERO, we finally had the floor replaced. This was done by VERO, supposedly at expense of the builder, they were even loath to share this information with me. I have taken the builder to the Building Practitioners Commission, he has received a smack on the wrist, what a poor outcome that was. Every time I see VERO mentioned in the press, it is always in a negative aspect, and its easy to see why. They just dont seem to get teh "custtomet service" part, it was as though I had to fight VERO and the buiolder to get what we thought we should have received in teh first place. The building insturance scheme in Victoria is more of a "scam" than a scheme. I am more tahn happy to supply extra information if it can assist your cause in any way. Needless to say, VERO is a four letter word in our house. I can see how many people who come up against tehm can give up on a claim , it caused great stress between my wife and myself, but eventually persistence won the day. If there is one single theing I could recommend to anyone in a similar case, its to document everything, every phone call, contact, visit.conversation, keep a record of it all, as that will help greatly, it did in our case.
